My Relationship with Aikido

May 9, 2016 @ 8:10 pm
by Flo Li
My Relationship with Aikido (by Lucia Evans) Aikido meaning the Power of Harmony, of all beings, all things working together. I asked the Universe for something that would help me move myself forward powerfully. The answer came back loud and clear. Aikido…. You need to practice Aikido. So for my birthday present last year 2015, I signed up for Aikido. I had had some exposure having taken my Son to it for a couple years, but I never actually invested time to experience it for myself. Aikido has changed my life. Really truly, I am so lucky that I listened [...]

Aikido and Openness

May 9, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

The following writing was a speech given by John Pergakes during his shodan exam. In aikido, we do not compare ourselves to one another, it is the importance of our inner development that matters the most. You and I might be very different in height, weight, physical abilities, emotional sensitivities, and even our pace of progress, yet in aikido we recognize each person is unique in our own journey, and the test of shodan is not only a memorization of techniques or the ability to make connections, but also it is a test to see how far we've come to [...]

Why Some Kids Try Harder and Some Kids Give Up

February 10, 2016 @ 10:56 pm

Via Huffington Post by Tracy Cutchlow My toddler struggled to buckle the straps on her high chair. "Almost," she muttered as she tried again and again. "Almost," I agreed, trying not to hover. When she got it, I exclaimed, "You did it! It was hard, but you kept trying, and you did it. I'm so proud of you." The way I praised her effort took a little effort on my part. If I hadn't known better, I might have just said, "Clever girl!" (Or even "Here, let me help you with that.") What's so bad about that? Read on. Stanford [...]

A Goodbye Letter from Aiki-Youth Student Eeshan Zele

November 17, 2015 @ 12:09 am

When I first started Aikido, I didn't know what it was. I thought it was like all the other martial arts. After training for about a year or so, I understood that unlike other martial arts, you have to use the other person's aggressive energy and turn it into your own peaceful energy. Kevin sensei and Flo sensei helped me understand this. All of you helped me to learn this and many other things like patience. Aikido helped me in a lot of ways. My grades are excellent whenever I'm training in aikido. It helped me be more focused, be [...]

Good day everyone! The next test date for Aiki-Kids will be on Saturday Nov 1st. Test preparation is already underway and we are excited to see so many new white belts looking forward to their first aikido test experience. In the next week, we will be deciding who is ready to test and an invite will be emailed to you individually by the beginning of next week. Many kids benefitted from the private instructions prior to our last test, so once again, we will have signup sheets on the clip board for private classes for this upcoming test. On Thursday [...]

Testing is complete and we are happy to see such dedication and progress in all our classes. Everyone tested have passed their belt/kyu test -- congratulations! It was wonderful to see our new yellow belts in the kids class as they are being freshly introduced to aikido. We are especially proud of our youth class as they gave their best to prepare and test with intense focus. We can honestly say it was one of the strongest tests we've ever seen. In the adult class, we felt blessed to witness two families progressing together onto the next level. Nicely done! [...]

Congratulations aiki-kids, aiki-youth, and the adults for a successful test today. Everyone dedicated a lot of time, energy, and sweat on the mats to prepare for today's test. The hard work really paid off! We also like to acknowledge the parents for helping their children preparing for the test. It is wonderful to hear how the children feel supported at home as they bring a strength of love and confidence into the dojo. We feel truly blessed! Here is the link to the pictures from today, feel free to download the ones you like.
